Even though it is high in calories, the studies carried out have found that the people who consumed walnuts regularly did not gain significant weight. Take care not to shell the walnuts till you are ready to use. If the walnuts are shelled, they should be refrigerated in a tightly sealed container and can be stored for up to one year.

It helps in preventing heart diseases by reducing the risk of blood clotting in the arteries. Omega-3 also leads to improvement in the ratio between the good and the bad cholesterol, leading to better heart health. It is also beneficial in reducing the production of plaque in heart and also prevents erratic heart rhythms. Walnut is rich in other essential amino acids such as alpha-linolenic acid and L-arginine which reduce the risk of narrowing of blood vessels.
It is also said to be rich in phytosterols, tocopherols, squalene and the amino acid arginine, which are excellent for the cardio –vascular health.
Walnuts are also called the ‘brain food’ as they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. This is because the cell membrane of the brain cell consists of fats. The membrane is responsible for the entry of nutrients and exit of the waste products from the cells. Omega-3 plays a major role in this process. People with low levels of Omega-3 fats tend to suffer from depression and lack of concentration.
Walnuts are also helpful in protecting bone health, promotion of a good sleeping habits and prevention of gallstones.
